Jamaican Timeline:
650: the “redware people” migrated from South America
850-900 AD: second wave of migrants, also from South America
1492: Columbus discovered the island when he first landed in the New World
1509:The Spanish claimed the new world, where most of the indigenous Arawak community died from European diseases. The African people were shipped to use as slaves for sugar plantations
1500’s- 1600’s: the Spanish were attacked by the Caribs, pirates, and buccaneers who were trying to get the gold the Spaniards were sending back.
1670: Jamaica was seized by the British
1692- The Jamaican capital Port Royal was destroyed by an earthquake, making Spanish Town new capital. After that, Kingston was founded.
1838- Slavery was abolished, freeing all of the African slaves from their work on the sugar plantations. This was due to the many riots where the people would do things like refuse to work, trying to keep things peaceful and civilized, but it escalated into a huge conflict where houses and warehouses full of sugarcane were burnt down which resulted in the death of 200 Africans and 14 British planters. 1939-1935: WWII took place. Though the war was far from the Jamaicans, the British allowed the United States to build naval bases on the island in exchange for their help. 1962- Jamaican independence. Jamiaca became independent from British rule, making Alexander Bustamante the elected prime minister.
1980- The US government helps the Jamaican government aid in order to help them gain distance from Cuba.
2004- On September 10th, Jamaica was directly hit by Hurricane Ivan, which cause huge damage. This lead to higher crime rates, looters roaming the streets of the capitol, and it destroyed many resorts and hotels, which is one of their biggest means of income.
